CIIE members on combating infectious diseases in Nature Medicine

A recent publication in the journal Nature Medicine highlighted a core tenet of the CIIE: that biomedical research will find sustained solutions to infectious disease only if it is broad and multidisciplinary.

The article (Nature Medicine 18: 217-220), penned by CIIE members Little, Allen, Babayan, Matthews and Colegrave describes a set of intriguing case-studies where the outcome of evolution would not have been easy to predict. It goes on to argue that  to counter the remarkable ability of pathogens to flout therapeutic intervention, the concepts and techniques of evolutionary biology should be deeply integrated with traditional approaches to the study of immunology and pathogen biology.
