On behalf of Centre for Infectious Diseases we are pleased to invite you to CID Distinguished Speaker seminar, followed by a workshop, given by Prof Prof Baumeister, one of the leaders in the field of cryomicroscopy.  We encourage you to come along!

Wolfgang Baumeister studied Biology in Münster and Bonn and received his doctoral degree in 1973 at the University of Düsseldorf where he did his habilitation in 1978. He was group leader at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry and professor at the universities of Düsseldorf and Munich.
Since 1988 Baumeister has been director at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried. He is about to apply the electronic tomography developed by him to whole cells and, at that, with a resolution that is expected to throw new light on life processes. Considerable methodological developments are still necessary for the analysis of the images and the presentation of the tomographic data. These are to evolve from close collaboration with groups at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in Berkeley and at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena/USA. The existing cooperation with Hokkaido National Research Institute in Sapporo, Japan, will be intensified.
